AMET: Advanced Microwave and Electromagnetic Treatment of Organic Substrate
EMC-Engineers/Scientists (EMC) is collaborating with AMET technology to offer a revolutionizing organic waste treatment through a patented (US Patent application 63/447,534, February 22, 2023) microwave and electromagnetic technology. This introduces an innovative solution that enhances anaerobic and aerobic digestion efficiency, increases biogas production, and reduces operational costs for waste treatment facilities.
AMET technology has been awarded a significant grant from the National Science Foundation (effective September 1st, 2024). The NSF’s rigorous merit review process recognized that “The proposed technology is novel, and the relevant market size is tremendous“ and that “The technology offers cost savings and revenue generation opportunities by treating organic waste more efficiently and increasing biogas production“. This funding will enable critical data collection and system optimization necessary for pilot-scale implementation, accelerating commercial development and market entry.

Energy Recovery & Cogeneration Solutions
Introduction
.Anaerobic & Aerobic Digestion process and plants remove hazardous organic waste from the environment and converts it to renewable energy.
Anaerobic & Aerobic Digestion process and plants are limited by digestion efficiency – a characteristically slow process
AMET is a patented technology that pretreats organic waste with microwaves and electro-magnetic energy to deliver more than 20% increased efficiency and 15% reduction in digestate quantity.
The AMET technology can revolutionize the organic waste treatment market and can enable it to be less and not dependent on government regulations and subsidies.
AMET Value Proposition
- Improved Efficiency
Enhanced digestion efficiency by 20%, leading to higher processing capacity and throughput.
- Increased Methane
Up to 20% higher methane production, directly translating to increased revenue streams.
- Reduced Waste
Up to 5% reduction in digestate disposal costs through more complete substrate processing.
- Energy Efficient
2-3 times reduction in energy costs relative to competing technologies.
- Seamless Integration
Risk-free and interruption-free installation on existing infrastructure.
- Rapid ROI
3-year payback period, making it an economically viable investment.
Operating Principle
The AMET system consists of a specialized conduit with externally attached:
- Microwave emitters
- Copper-wire alternating current magnetic field generator
This unique combination creates a synergistic effect that:
- Increases biodegradability through faster breakdown of feedstock
- Enhances metabolic rate of the biomass
- Improves digestion efficiency by approximately 20%
- Reduces energy costs by 2-3 times compared to alternative methods
Advanced System Functionality
Optimized Biogas Production
AMET significantly increases both biogas yield and methane concentration, resulting in higher-quality fuel output with greater calorific value and market value.
Enhanced Processing Capacity
Improved biodegradation kinetics allow for reduced hydraulic retention times in digesters, increasing throughput capacity of existing infrastructure.
Retrofit Compatibility
The system can be retrofitted to existing infrastructure without process interruption, as it is installed externally on feed pipes rather than requiring internal modifications.
Intelligent Adaptation
AMET automatically modulates treatment intensity based on real-time analysis of feedstock composition and flow rate, ensuring optimal performance across varying conditions.
Product Highlights and Advantages

Increased Methane Production
Enables 20% higher gas production, directly translating to increased revenue streams for biogas plant operators. Higher methane concentration improves fuel quality and market value of produced biogas.
Reduced Digestate Volume
15% reduction in digestate quantity significantly lowers operational expenses related to post-processing, transportation, and final disposal of residual materials.
Universal Applicability
AMET can be installed on feed pipes of both new and existing facilities without process interruption, making implementation risk-free and minimizing downtime costs.
Increased Plant Capacity
Faster biodegradation kinetics result in lower hydraulic retention times, enabling higher processing volumes through existing infrastructure without capital expansion.
Competing Technologies
Mechanical Pretreatment Methods
These techniques reduce particle size in feedstock to increase bio-availability. Examples include sonication, liquid shear, collision, high-pressure homogenization, and liquefaction.
Main drawback: High energy consumption often negates efficiency gains in biogas production, resulting in marginal or negative ROI.
Enzymes and Chemical Additives
These approaches boost microbial populations by adding beneficial bacteria or nutrients to enhance digestion processes.
Main drawbacks: Requires continuous application, provides only short-term impact, and shows inconsistent correlation to performance metrics.
AMET Technology
Our approach increases the metabolic rate of existing microbial populations through non-thermal electromagnetic mechanisms.
Advantages: One-time installation with continuous benefits, automatic adaptation to feedstock variations, and minimal energy requirements compared to alternatives.
